Open Mics

In virtual monthly open mics, all YPW community members get the chance to perform. Whether it is their first time or the hundredth, every poet’s performance receives equal respect. Open mics bring together dozens of writers whether for a morning, afternoon, or evening of poetry. The events provide our community members a chance to be heard and to listen, to practice their performance and learn from others, and most of all to share and hear new work in an open and supportive space.

Writing Workshops

Through our workshop series, YPW funds and provides the audience for members of our community to lead unique hour-long seminars on craft. Previous workshops include dissections of the ghazal, deep dives into AAVE poeticism, and a study of the function of the dream in poetry.

Write-Ins

Write-ins are more informal events that serve as a space for chatting, community, and writing time. Meant to be a space where poets can work together in harmony on projects, they are also a space for simply enjoying what truly makes YPW unique—its shared passion and sense of community support.

Book Club Q&As

Book Club highlights chapbooks penned by members of the YPW community. The selected book is made open-access for Book Club participants and, over the course of a month, participants read the text with various questions about the work’s content and craft to guide them. Book Club culminates in a reading and FAQ led by the author.

Literary Magazine Fair

Our annual Literary Magazine Fair is the highlight of our year. Through a weekend packed with various panels and workshop events, the fair brings together various youth-run magazines as well as many others with longstanding ties to the YPW community. YPW sponsors an expedited-response period for the length of the fair to allow attendees to submit to these magazines without the barrier of submissions fees and with the delight of quick response.

Summer Program Consulting

Each spring, YPW hosts summer program consulting for the members of our community. In these individual sessions, members of our board with experience specific to a young writer’s program(s) of interest will spend 45 minutes to an hour discussing the application process, the experience of the program, giving advice, and providing feedback on application materials. In the past, we have consulted on applications to the Adroit Journal and SUNHOUSE Summer Mentorship Programs, Iowa Young Writers’ Studio, and Kenyon Young Writers Workshop.

Summer Mentorship

Launched in 2025, our summer mentorship program pairs promising young writers with experienced writers from within our community. The program removes the accessibility barrier often inherent to traditional writing camps and mentorship programs. Mentorship follows a flexible curriculum tailored to the expertise of the mentor and interests of the student; the program culminates in a program-wide portfolio project. Most of all, the goal is to create relationships between mentees and mentors that last far beyond the program’s end.

Because the writing world often centers around the negative, there is so much potential in incorporating joy into our writing. In this workshop, we will explore all the potential there is for writing joy, whether that is in relation with grief or simply on its own. The workshop will include a discussion on what and why we write, annotating joy in poetry, some tips from both Aster Lit and YPW, and time to write and share your own pieces.
